Publius Vergilius Maro (70 př. n. l.-19 n. l.), nejvýznamnější římský básník tzv. zlatého období římské literatury, vytvořil epos Aeneis na přání císaře Augusta. Dílo psané v hexametru (šestistopém verši) sestává z dvanácti knih a téměř 10 000 veršů. Je zásadně ovlivněno homérskými eposy a pojednává o cestě hrdiny Aenea, mytického předka rodu Juliů, z hořící Tróje do Itálie a o jeho následných bojích s italickými kmeny. Aeneas pokládaný za praotce Římanů, je v eposu vylíčen jako ideální Říman zosobňující všechny národní ctnosti. Epos zásadně ovlivnil římskou i pozdější evropskou literaturu - od středověku, přes dobu renesance a humanismu až po současnost a představuje jeden ze základů klasického kánonu pro studia latiny i filologie. Aeneis se mj. stala i inspirací pro Dantovu Božskou komedii, v níž je Vergilius ztělesněním umění a lidské duševní sil. Převod Aeneidy do češtiny má dlouhou tradici - klasický a dodnes nejcitovanější je však především překlad Otmara Vaňorného (1933), z něhož vychází i modernější překlad Rudolfa Mertlíka (1970). Vzhledem k významu Aeneidy a době, která uplynula od vzniku Vaňorného překladu, je nutné ocenit rozhodnutí Michala Ctibora pořídit překlad zcela nový, moderní, respektující však zároveň tradici časoměrného překladu antické literatury v českém prostředí. Ctiborův překlad Vergiliova eposu představuje zásadní ediční počin nejen v rámci edice Antika, a aspiruje i na to, aby oslovil jak odbornou, tak i širší čtenářskou obec, jíž antická literatura, historie a kultura stále ještě něco říká.
