Ve svém románu vykresluje s precizností a vtipem nejen události a společenské prostředí, ale především konkrétní lidské charaktery. Mistrně vylíčil zejména Driffieldovu první manželku Rosie, která je centrální postavou románu. Rosie je zosobněním nespoutané, bezprostřední a živelné ženskosti, která vybočuje z konvenčních společenských norem a je často kvůli své uvolněné morálce, prostotě a „obyčejnosti“ trnem v oku lidí z vyšší společnosti. Román, napsaný před necelým stoletím, je i pro dnešního čtenáře poutavý díky mistrovskému vypravěčství a dokonale propracované psychologii postav. Česky byl titul publikován poprvé v roce 1975, nyní vychází v revidovaném vydání již jako třetí svazek z Maughamovy tvorby v edici Pozdní sběr.
