Čtyři roky sloužil v rakouské armádě, ale vážně zraněn byl až v československém vojsku. V roce 1936 obhajoval Němce obviněného z velezrady, kvůli čemuž byl označen za zrádce a defétistu. Po Mnichovu se ale postavil za židovské kolegy z advokacie a za války působil v odboji.
