Sofokles je jeden z najväčších starogréckych dramatikov. V jeho hrách dominuje ľudská vôľa, psychológia jednotlivých postáv a z nej vyplývajúce antagonizmy a konflikty, ktorých povaha býva práve tak osobná ako spoločenská. Jeho zachované dramatické dielo je dodnes živé, no spomedzi všetkých hier najživšia je Antigona. Hra sa odohráva v mýtickej dobe pred tébskym palácom. Po smrti kráľa Oidipa sa vlády v Tébach spoločne ujali jeho dvaja synovia Polyneikes a Eteokles. Zakrátko však vznikli medzi nimi rozpory a v boji sa navzájom pripravili o život. Po ich smrti sa vlády ujal ich strýko Kreón. Dej Sofoklovej Antigony sa začína vo chvíli, keď nový tébsky kráľ vydá rozkaz, že iba Eteokles smie byť pochovaný so všetkými poctami. Jeho brat Polyneikes, ktorý sa pokúšal dobyť Téby, si však podobný pohreb nezaslúži, a preto má ostať nepochovaný napospas divej zveri. Knižné vydanie obsahuje celkom nové, prepracované vydanie prekladu hry Antigona. Jazyková interpretácia profesora J. Špaňára vznikla ako podklad prebásnenia na objednávku SND a dielo prebásnil Ľubomír Feldek (1970). Text hry vyšiel aj knižne (Slovenský spisovateľ – 1974, Tatran – 1982). Výsledkom nového Feldekovho prebásnenie hry (prepracoval takmer celý jej preklad) je jambický trimeter, ktorý znova upevnil a verše všetkých replík sú teraz dvanásťslabičné – tak ako v origináli.
